Ron DeSantis is taking up for supporters of former President Donald Trump after Hillary Clinton’s latest critical comments about them, and using one of Clinton’s terms in the process.
“Hillary Clinton is deplorable for saying that Trump voters should be placed in a reeducation camp. This just shows how nuts the left has become,” DeSantis tweeted. “The left wants a one-party state — and will get one if we don’t fight back!”
This is DeSantis’ second reheat of the controversy involving the 2016 presidential opponents, but the first where he referenced the former Secretary of State’s “basket of deplorables” characterization of the MAGA movement.
During an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” the Florida Governor was asked about Clinton’s proposed “re-education” of Trumpers, calling them “patriotic Americans” and expressing confidence he could reach them.
“I reject that. I mean, look, these are patriotic Americans,” DeSantis said.
“These folks get it. They want to see the country do well. Some people will be with Trump no matter what. But I think the bulk of the people are people that appreciate what he did.”
That’s a different tone from DeSantis had in August when he described some Trump supporters as “listless vessels.”
Ironically, there are parallels between that sentiment and some of Clinton’s remarks.
“Maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members,” she said.
