Gov. Ron DeSantis has often said his three kids are big Seminoles football fans, but as Florida State enters the final football season of his tenure, the passion has waned in the face of on-field failure.
“Because we’re in Tallahassee with the state capital, they’ve grown up around Florida State, and they’ve become fans. But I will tell you, after the last two seasons, they’re not as optimistic as they had been two years ago with the hope and everything,” DeSantis said in Lake City.
In 2023, DeSantis was so disgusted by FSU’s omission from the College Football Playoff that he wanted to spend $1 million to sue the organization. That fell apart, as did an effort by then-Attorney General Ashley Moody to launch an antitrust probe of the CFP selection committee.
Just as the legal actions collapsed, so did the FSU football team. After a 60-point loss in the Orange Bowl, the Seminoles won just seven games over the next two seasons.
After a 1-6 start in 2024, DeSantis said his son Mason was “really struggling” with the team’s shortcomings. During a speaking engagement at Notre Dame that year, the Governor correctly predicted a Florida State loss in South Bend.
DeSantis has weighed in on the mixed performance of college football teams in the state many times, and his comments Thursday expanded to the University of Florida’s team as well.
“Both of them need to up their games from recent years,” DeSantis said.
The Gators were 4-8 last year and have a losing record over the last three years.
