Gov. DeSantis still doesn’t have language, votes for ‘revolutionary’ property tax repeal plan

Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a “guarantee” to Fox News viewers Monday that Floridians would get to vote to repeal homestead property taxes in November.

But he still hasn’t figured out what that looks like and he still doesn’t have enough support to get it through the House and Senate with 60% votes in each legislative chamber.

“Now we are going to go and get an amendment on the ballot. Voters have to approve it, which will say your homestead residence (is going to) be exempt from property tax. So we’re working on how to structure that. I’ve got to get the votes in the Legislature, but I guarantee you that will be on the ballot, and voters will have a chance to do it, and that’ll really be revolutionary to be able to go,” he said on “The Ingraham Angle.”

DeSantis said last week he was “working with legislators” to find agreeable language ahead of a Special Session call later this year, even as House Speaker Daniel Perez told a reporter last weekend that he and his colleagues hadn’t seen the proposal.

DeSantis told Sean Hannity last month that the “timing” of the prospective relief was an issue, and his comments since have suggested that the issues are larger than just timing, coming down to the concept itself.

DeSantis has floated the idea of the state subsidizing the mere “budget dust” of what would have been property tax collections for 32 of the state’s 67 counties, an idea that incoming Speaker Sam Garrison says he opposes, suggesting that whatever Special Session is called for this concept will have some give-and-take and drama in the final product.

If DeSantis can land the plane, at least one new poll suggests voters would be on board.

A survey from Stetson University’s Center for Public Opinion Research shows that if DeSantis actually introduces his plan and the Legislature votes to put it on the ballot, it would get 77% support, and would easily clear the 60% threshold to ratify it as a constitutional amendment.
