The passing of Roy Johnson, who served two terms as Mayor of Holly Hill and later on the City Commission, will be honored with a traditional flag-lowering at government buildings.
Governor Ron DeSantis ordered the United States and Florida flags to be flown at half-staff at the Capitol and at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds in Holly Hill from sunrise to sunset on Friday.
In a statement, DeSantis said Johnson “will be remembered for his love of community and dedication to improving the City of Holly Hill.”
Johnson died on March 23 at age 86, after a life marked by service, craftsmanship, and community leadership. According to his obituary, he was born in Baltimore in November 1939 and grew up in Virginia. After high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for more than six years as an airplane mechanic.
He built a career as a master mechanic, opening One Stop Automotive in Holly Hill in 1970. Later, he joined Florida Power & Light and worked as a lead technician there for more than 40 years.
Johnson was elected Mayor of Holly Hill in 2010. In 2020, he ran for and won the District 4 seat on the City Commission. He also served as Vice Mayor during his time in office.
Johnson, a Republican, was preceded in death by his wife Marie, his son Roy Jr., and several brothers. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, and extended family.
A visitation and funeral service will take place on April 10 at Holly Hill Church of Christ, followed by a military honors burial at Daytona Memorial Park.
Guests are welcome to wear traditional black, according to his obituary, but red, white, and blue attire is encouraged to honor Johnson’s service.
