Casey DeSantis, songwriter: First Lady uses AI for compositions

Is a holiday album coming from Florida’s First Lady?

According to Gov. Ron DeSantis, First Lady Casey DeSantis marshals artificial intelligence to write tunes for a very specific audience: the family’s three children.

“You know, they actually do AI songs. So my wife, I love her, but she’ll put in, ‘Write a song about Madison, Mason and Mamie, our kids going to the park,’ and they will write a song about it. And then there’s like an app where you can put the lyrics into the app and they will actually play a song,” the Governor recounted at the Florida Rural Economic Development Summit.

“So my kids, when she started doing that, after a couple times, they’re just like, ‘Mommy, we don’t like AI songs. We like real songs.’ It’s just funny to see how people respond to some of this stuff.”

So maybe no holiday album after all.

The Governor has been a frequent critic of AI, and he rehashed many of those critiques of the technology’s potential “big pitfalls” in his latest remarks.

He complained again that Grok gave him bad advice on how to watch a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game after Tallahassee was forced to see the Jacksonville Jaguars in the same time slot. He also said AI would “undercut” jobs.

But this was the first time he discussed this particular creative endeavor of the First Lady.

If Casey DeSantis were to release music and if it were to chart, she would join a growing trend. Billboard says at least six songs with AI assistance have charted thus far.

So even if the family doesn’t like the tunes, an audience may exist nonetheless.

Ron DeSantis hasn’t been shy of late in discussing his own musical preferences, including teasing a playlist release in the wake of one under his name that he says is a fake.

“Someone, like, put out these like song lists and they attributed one to me. It just wasn’t. I mean, there was some good stuff on there. You know, they had Johnny Cash. They had everything like that. And so people are like, well, why don’t you put out your list? So we are going to put out the list. So stay tuned on that,” the Governor said in September.

The Hodge-Podge Mix falsely attributed to DeSantis includes Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” along with other toe-tappers such as Elton John’s anthemic “I’m Still Standing,” The Trampps’ “Disco Inferno,” the Village People’s “YMCA,” the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive,” Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA,” and a heaping helping of hits from The Eagles.

His favorite full-length albums are on the metal side.

“I’d take ‘Appetite for Destruction’ and ‘Master of Puppets’ if I had to choose between albums from the mid-to-late 80s vs the early 90s,” DeSantis said this year, referring to the first Guns N’ Roses full-length and a Metallica tape from when the band was in its prime.

He also indicates a real preference for rock music from 1991.

“Epic year — and it signaled the evolution from metal/hair rock towards grunge/alternative rock,” DeSantis said, quote tweeting a post with cassette cases for Metallica’s self-titled album; Pearl Jam’s “10”; the Guns and Roses “Use Your Illusion” double album; and commercial breakthroughs from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden and Nirvana.
