Byron Donalds has Ron DeSantis’ back in redistricting fight

While many Republican members of Congress are running from the redistricting plan proposed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds is backing it.

During an interview on Newsmax, Donalds, who currently is running to succeed DeSantis as Governor, expressed full confidence in what will come out of next week’s Special Session.

“I think the Governor, what he’s going to do with our Legislature is very clear: They’re going to go back, look at our maps, and make sure that those maps represent the will of the people of Florida,” said Donalds, who represents Southwest Florida.

He also supports DeSantis’ claim that seats are currently malapportioned and that Florida was cheated out of a seat during the 2020 census.

“If you look at our state politically, our state has trended more and more Republican. I will add that we still believe that the census that was done by the Joe Biden administration actually cost the state of Florida an additional congressional seat,” Donalds said.

“So I think some of that is going to be in play as well. But I think the Governor and the Legislature are going to address this. We’ll see what they come up with. I know they’re going to work very hard and do what’s right on behalf of the people of Florida.”

In backing the Governor, Donalds is at odds with many in the Florida delegation.

Reps. Mario Díaz-BalartCarlos GiménezGreg Steube and Daniel Webster are among those who worry that an aggressive map will put their seats in play.
