The nonprofit Equal Ground is bringing together advocates to issue a rebuke to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ State of the State address on Tuesday.
A group of leaders from organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Florida Education Association, the League of Women Voters of Florida and more, are planning to release their own Legislative priorities for the 2026 Session, which starts Tuesday.
“Too often, the Governor’s time in office has been shaped by partisan agendas and national and federal influence rather than the needs of everyday Floridians,” organizers said in a press release announcing the event, which will take place at the Florida Education Association’s headquarters in Tallahassee shortly after DeSantis’ speech ends. “And with threats to suppress voters and manipulate districts to consolidate political power escalating in Florida and nationwide, advocates are urging the state’s lawmakers to safeguard democracy by rejecting any effort to pursue mid-decade partisan redistricting and enact policies that protect voting rights, defend civil liberties, and expand opportunities for affordable housing, health care access, quality public education, economic mobility, and safe communities, ensuring that all Floridians have a real voice in government.”
Speakers at the event will include: Genesis Robinson, Executive Director of Equal Ground; Andrew Spar, President of the Florida Education Association; Jonathan Scott Webber, Policy Director of Southern Poverty Law Center; Amy Keith, Executive Director of Common Cause Florida; Abdelilah Skhir, Senior Strategist at American Civil Liberties Union; Byron Green, Justice Over Everything; Jessica Lowe Minor, President of League of Women Voters of Florida; Natasha Sutherland, Executive Director of Florida Watch; and Jamil Davis, Black Voters Matter.
DeSantis is giving his final State of the State address in front of the Legislature on Tuesday as the 2026 Regular Session reconvenes.
Some of DeSantis’ recent priorities have been repealing property taxes, investing in road construction projects and adding more oversight for artificial intelligence.
