Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has reappointed Nick Patronis to the governing Board of the Northwest Florida Water Management District (NWFWMD).
This is Patronis’ fifth appointment to the nine-member Board, having first been appointed in July 2011 by Gov. Rick Scott and subsequently reappointed in 2015, 2020 and 2022. He currently serves as an at-large member representing Panama City and is also the Board’s secretary.
His reappointment is still subject to confirmation by the Senate. Patronis’ current term technically ended on March 1, but he is allowed to continue serving in a “holdover” capacity under state law.
Patronis’ older brother is U.S. Rep. Jimmy Patronis, who served as Florida’s Chief Financial Officer before being elected last year to represent Florida’s 1st Congressional District.
The younger Patronis attended Gulf Coast State College and serves as the Vice President of Captain Anderson’s Restaurant, both of which are located in Panama City.
“Active in his community, he has served as a member of the National and Florida Restaurant Associations. An avid sportsman, Patronis enjoys spending time outdoors and participating in a variety of sporting activities,” reads a statement issued by the Governor announcing the reappointment.
The NWFWMD is one of five water management districts created by the Water Resources Act of 1972 to manage water resources across the state. It serves approximately 1.5 million residents across 11,305 square miles and 16 counties, including Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton, Washington, and western Jefferson County.
Among other powers and responsibilities, Florida’s water management districts issue environmental and water-use permits, operate regional flood-control infrastructure, buy conservation land, and levy local property taxes to protect regional water supplies.
Serving on the Board is an unpaid, volunteer position.
The Legislature is not scheduled to convene for its next regularly scheduled Session until March 2, 2027, but Patronis will continue serving until he is officially confirmed.
