Ron DeSantis praises Scottish World Cup fans for drinking Florida’s bars dry

Gov. Ron DeSantis is praising Scottish fans in the United States for the World Cup, lauding them for being able to hold their liquor.

“We had all these Scottish people come, and they’re wearing the kilts, and they’re kind of like, not storming in a bad way, but like out on the streets. Just drinking these bars dry, like all this stuff … having a really, really good time,” DeSantis said in Lakeland.

“There’s no rioting, no anything like that. I mean, it was very cheerful.”

Scotland has a slim chance of moving forward in the tourney, so it remains to be seen if they will present further challenges to the booze business. But they have left their mark, DeSantis said.

He noted that one of the “iconic Irish pubs” in Boston ran out of beer when the team and its fans were in town, and joked that the Sunshine State planned so it wouldn’t happen during their Florida sojourn.

“Just for the record, there were precautions made in Miami so that they did not drink Miami dry. I know that they had some extra tankers and all this stuff. I had Kevin Guthrie at the Florida Division of Emergency Management on standby,” DeSantis quipped.

DeSantis also credits the tourney with giving visiting fans an idea of what America actually is like.

“We do have a really great country. I know there’s a lot of problems. I know we see a lot of things that we wish we could change immediately. And I know there’s a lot of work to do, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” DeSantis said.

“I think a lot of these people who’ve been able to visit from some of these other countries have gotten to see firsthand both the generosity of the American people, but also that this is a good country. And I think that they’re acknowledging that.”
