Former House Speaker Paul Renner wouldn’t change a thing about the Gov. Ron DeSantis administration.
Renner, a candidate for Governor from Palm Coast, said during an interview that he agrees with DeSantis on “many, most issues … 97% of things.”
Pressed by interviewer Jackie Nespral to identify an area of divergence, Renner wouldn’t commit to anything.
“I don’t know of anything specifically where we just don’t agree,” he said. “I don’t know that there’s anything I would do differently, really. I think he’s been a great Governor. I don’t know that there’s any Governor in America that’s been anywhere close to what he’s done on issue after issue. So if you like the free state of Florida, you want to protect it and expand it, you’ll like me, if you like Gov. DeSantis.”
DeSantis once called Renner’s decision to run “ill-advised,” but more recently lauded his performance as House Speaker, where Renner helped to get DeSantis’ agenda through.
Renner and others are waiting to find out whether DeSantis will endorse anyone this cycle, given DeSantis’ aversion to front-runner Byron Donalds, the third-term Congressman backed by President Donald Trump.
DeSantis is taking his time announcing any decision on that front, saying he has “unfinished business” as Governor. That includes line-item vetoes on the budget and getting a property tax amendment being considered by the Legislature this week onto the ballot in November.
“I typically don’t do the political stuff prior to me getting all the ducks in a row that I need to make sure that the state is going well. So we’ll see how that all shakes out over the next couple weeks,” DeSantis said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
