Gov. Ron DeSantis looks to finish his term strong, but CNN political analyst Harry Enten argues that whatever he does, the lame duck isn’t catching flight in 2028 with Republican voters outside the state of Florida.
Enten argued that prediction markets and search traffic suggest that America’s Governor isn’t on track to be the next American President, even as he leaves open the possibility of a second run for the presidency.
“I think Ron DeSantis will run if there’s a lane. But right now, there really isn’t a lane,” Enten said on CNN News Central, explaining that the Kalshi prediction market puts DeSantis’ odds to win the nomination at just 4%.
“He’s running fifth right now to be the Republican nominee, according to the Kalshi prediction market, behind J.D. Vance, behind Marco Rubio, behind Tucker Carlson, behind Donald Trump Jr., for goodness sake. Running fifth, and only a 4% chance, that’s not really a lane.”
Enten then looked at New Hampshire, a state where DeSantis floundered in running a hard-right campaign ahead of the state’s open Primary and dropped out before the vote in 2024.
The Granite State is equally rocky for Ron.
“Ron DeSantis, you know, in late 2025, 6% of likely Republican voters were choosing him. Now, it’s that same 6%, running fourth again. This is not first. This is not second. This is not even third. It’s fourth place, running behind JD Vance, running behind Marco Rubio, running behind Nikki Haley, who, of course, came in second back in 2024,” Enten said.
Enten noted that DeSantis’ 2024 run “imploded,” but that he may make even less of an impact in 2028.
“I couldn’t even say that that run would implode, because it wouldn’t really be anywhere to start out with,” Enten said.
Enten turned his attention to internet interest in DeSantis, spotlighting Google search traffic being down 1% Sunday and Monday.
He argued that those metrics indicate further a lack of “sustained” interest in DeSantis even in the wake of aggressive congressional redistricting he muscled through the Legislature last week.
“Ron DeSantis may want to run. I’m just not quite sure he can run,” Enten said.
Talk has resumed about a potential role in the Donald Trump administration for DeSantis, even as that would seem to be a tough sell on staffers carrying grudges from Florida. But whether that could be a bridge to another run for the top job is far from certain.
